DIY – Graduation Cap Bottle Toppers with College Logos

May 1, 2021 by Cindy Springer Leave a Comment

– MAKE IT! Bottle Topper with College Logos –

This DIY graduation party project is for graduation caps to put on bottles as decorative toppers.

After the aisle stroll and the hat toss it’s time for a college graduation party! We call this graduation party, “Hat’s Off to the Class of 2021!” These colorful bottle toppers look like graduation caps when perched atop beverage bottles. They make memorable party decorations on bottles of beer, water, or wine, plus show pride for the alma mater as you honor your graduate.

Graduation Party Theme - "Hats Off to the Class of 2021". DIY bottle toppers with your graduate's school logo. Make these party decorations with minimal fuss.

Supply List

  • Template – free download – see below
  • Wrapping paper or scrap-booking paper with the grad’s college or university logo – use contrasting colors if available
  • Mini tassels
  • Glue dots dispenser or glue gun
  • Poster board
  • Colorful brads
  • Scissors
  • Pencil

The uniqueness of this DIY project is the logo paper from your grad’s university. I was lucky enough to find this University of Washington (Go Huskies!) scrapbooking paper in a nearby craft store, but there are many sites selling wrapping paper or scrapbook paper with college logos. The logo paper is glued on top of a square of poster board to make the top of the graduation cap sturdy.

The mini-tassels are a great find from Hobby Lobby. They’re actually 2 inch drapery tassels, but they were so perfect and inexpensive I couldn’t resist. They are available in gold, red, black, and cream. As you can see they are priced $2.49 for four tassels. Buying them sure beats making them from scratch for saving time. YouTube has many tutorials on how to make tassels using yarn or embroidery thread, if you are inclined to hand make them.

How to Make Graduation Party Favors Using Your School Logo

April 3, 2017 by Jenny Walters 2 Comments

Today I want to share a super cute favor idea for graduation parties. It’s a personalized bottle with a graduation topper for soda, beer, or wine bottles. I’ll show you how to make it with your graduate’s school mascot or logo. This also makes a great favor for tailgating parties and it’s also a lot of fun to make. It only takes cutting and tracing skills so anyone can assemble this favor.

Personalized graduation favors for bottles

First,  you’ll want to make custom stickers with the logo of your graduate. How do you get the logo you ask? Simple, do am image search on the web for the logo, then save it and download it to your device. Be sure to watch this video on how to download a logo.

In the example video I searched for a local university’s logo.  If you are unable to watch the video follow these steps to add a mascot or logo to your sticker:

How to Download a Logo From Search

  1. Do an image search to locate your school mascot or logo. JPG or PNG files work best with BYB’s online design studio. The larger the file size of your mascot or logo the better. Tiny files print blurry. PNG files give you a transparent background so you can add a background color to your sticker if you like.
  2. Right click on the file you want to save.
  3. Save the file to your desktop.
  4. Go to this page and select the label shape, size, and quantity.
  5. Click the Customize button and now you are in the design studio.
  6. Click  Add Image on the left nav bar.
  7. Search your files and select the file you saved, click OPEN.
  8. When the file uploads click on it to select it and drag the corner to the size you need while holding down on the mouse.
  9. Click Add Text on the left and start typing your message in the box.
  10. Select the text and on the right in the Text Options tool bar select the Font Family and adjust the font size. You can also choose the text color to coordinate with the logo or mascot.

Materials List

Supplies to make graduation favors-bottle toppers

  • Cardstock or scrapbooking paper size 8.5 x 11 inches in your school colors or better yet with your school logo or mascot. Our local scrapbooking store stocks craft paper with area college logos.
  • Scissors
  • Patterned or colored straws
  • Decorative Pom-poms (found ours at Michaels)
  • Double-sided tape.
  • Bakers twine
  • Craft glueGraduation favors

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Print out the PDF pattern provided below by clicking on the link. Trace the pattern on the cardstock or scrapbooking paper.  Tip: Trace on the backside of the paper so your tracing marks don’t show.
  2. Cut out the topper. For an even “craftier” look use scissors that cut a pattern, like pinking shears or scallops.
  3. Place your custom circle sticker with the school logo from Bottle Your Brand on the center of the cone template.
  4. Form the cutout into a cone matching the bottom edge, then secure the overlap with double sided tape.
  5. Glue a pom-pom on the top of the hat. Use glue liberally!
  6. Attach the colored drinking straw to the base of the soda bottle with baker’s twine using a simple bow knot. Secure tightly.
  7. Place the topper on the bottle. You’re done!

I stumbled upon this scrapbooking paper at a local craft store. They stock paper with mascots from various nearby state universities. For those of you in a hurry to create a graduation favor and don’t have time to order a custom sticker, this is a great alternative for making your favors quickly.  Trace the hat template on the back side of the scrapbooking paper and cut out. Follow the rest of the steps to finish the bottle toppers. These toppers fit many types of bottles from water bottles to soda bottles. It’s an easy way to make your party look exceptionally festive.

Finish the Look with a Personalized Label

To complete the look of your graduation favor you’ll want to add a custom bottle label with the graduate’s photo. To create a custom bottle label, like a soda label, water bottle label, or beer label, simply choose one of our graduation templates and upload a photo into the online designer the same way you added the logo. All of our labels are waterproof so the bottles can be kept cool in the fridge until it’s time to take them out and add the custom favor topper. This is one graduation favor everyone will remember! I’ll bet the bottles are taken home as keepsakes once the party is over.

Three Easy Graduation Favors Anyone Can Make

May 8, 2014 by Cindy Springer 5 Comments

With graduation season approaching fast we’re sharing three easy graduation favors anyone can make. If you’ve never claimed to be like Martha, but want a lot of bang for the buck when party-planning, read on. Each favor takes only minutes to make and won’t blow your party budget. We’ve provided step-by-step instructions, photos, and a list of the materials you’ll need to assemble each favor. When possible we provide a source to shop for the materials and include the cost.

#1. Champagne Flute Graduation Favors

Instead of party favor goodie bags check out these party favor Champagne flutes full of candy and topped with a graduation cap. Use school colors for the tassle and the brad fastener for a personalized touch. Since they’re graduation favors we used candies called Smarties. Appropriate for the occasion!

Easy graduation favors anyone can make.

Materials:

Supplies to make the champagne flute graduation favors.

  • Clear Plastic Champagne Flutes – Package of 20 for $9.99 at Party City.
  • Black Poster Board for Top of Mortar Board Hat, buy by the sheet at your local craft store or a 5- pack 22 inch x 28 inch sheets for $6.29 at Office Max.
  • Black Construction Paper for Base of Mortar Board Hat, 50 Sheet Pack for $1.99 at Office Max.
  • Candies of Choice, We used “Smarties Candy Rolls” for the demo favor, $2.99 for a 14 oz. bag.
  • Paper Fasteners or Brads in the color of your choice, We R Memory Makers brand, $3.49 from Ben Franklin store. We used black and white, but they’re available in other colors such as red, orange, yellow green, aqua, blue and purple.
  • Embroidery Floss or crewel embroidery yarn in the color of your choice, $0.99 each JoAnn Fabric & Craft.

Download a printable template for this mortar board topper here.

Mortar Board Cap Top:

Take the poster board and with a ruler measure a 3 inch by 3 inch square. Cut out one square and use it as a template for the rest of the hat tops.

Mortar Board Cap Base:

Use a string or fabric tape measure and measure around the top of the champagne flute. Add 1/2 inch to the measurement. Cut the black construction paper that measurement by 1.25 inches wide and cut two small tabs on the top of one lengthwise side as in the illustration. The size for the champagne flute in the example is 7 inches by 1.25 inches.

Assembly:

Form a circle with the base piece that is just wide enough to slip over the top of the plastic champagne flute and staple the ends together.  The ends should overlap. Fold down the tabs. The tabs are used to glue the base to the top. Now take the 3 inch square and punch a hole in the center.

Cut either colored yard or embroidery thread 4 inches and poke through the hole in the cap top. Secure by putting a paper fastener through the hole and on the underside of the cap top wind around the prongs then open, pinning the yarn against the bottom of the cap.

This photo illustrates how to attach the tassle to the mortar board cap using a black fastener.

Put a dab of Elmer’s glue on the tabs. With the cap upside down place the glue side of the tabs against the cap top, press down and let dry.

How to glue the base to the cap.

Fill the champagne flutes with Smarties and carefully slip the cap over the top of the flute. Your party favor is ready to go. If you’re serving sparking cider or champagne. Simply pull off the cap, take out the Smarties and serve.

#2 Mini Wine Labels for Sparkling Cider bottles or Mini Wine Bottles

This favor is pretty simple to create. Shop for mini bottles in either sparkling cider or wine. Measure the label area on the bottles you purchased to see which size mini wine label to order. Sizes available on Bottle Your Brand are 3 ” x 2″, 3″ x 3″, and 2″ x 3″.  Make the mini wine label by customizing a message and uploading a mascot or photo on bottleyourbrand.com

The only part of the process that might be a little inconvenient is soaking off the old labels. This product will help remove any left over glue residue. Once the existing labels are off all you need to do is put the new labels on and you’re done. How simple is that? And they look great!

An easy graduation favor to make is mini wine bottle labels on mini bottles of sparkling cider.

#3. Wine Hang Tags with a College Mascot or School Logo

To dress up the party table add a custom wine hang tag to the beverage bottles, whether wine, soda pop or beer. The way to create a custom hang tag like this one is to do a search for a large image of the graduate’s school mascot and upload into our design studio. Add your message of congratulations and you’re done. The design studio lets you choose font styles and colors so you can match the school colors of your graduate’s alma mater.
