Tea with the Bride to Be Chalkboard Sign

March 4, 2019 by Cindy Springer Leave a Comment

Hi Ladies. Let’s have tea with the bride-to-be! I made this sign for a bridal shower tea for my niece. As a first time sign maker I was a bit intimidated, but really loved how it turned out. I made some mistakes that I’ll help you avoid, and I’ll share tips so you can create this DIY chalkboard sign without some of the problems I encountered. It took one evening to make the sign and this tutorial will help you master it too. Use the free PDF template and the shopping list of the materials provided below. This post should help you make a bridal shower sign that’s sure to wow! I share some tea party favor labels with you too, to help with your tea party planning.

Materials for DIY Sign
“Let’s Have Tea with the Bride-to-Be”

Shopping List

  • Black Ornate Chalkboard – Check out this page for the sign I used as well as other sign selections. TIP: The sign I used is not a true chalkboard even though that’s the name of the product. It’s also a bit larger than the PDF template; see step 3 below to adjust the size larger.
  • Bistro Chalk Markers – One bullet tip and one chisel tip. TIP: Use chalk paint or chalk sticks if you have a real chalkboard.
  • Printer and paper
  • Transfer paper – Not the iron on kind, but the kind for other surfaces
  • Easel to hold the sign
  • Removable Scotch tape
  • Pencil or Pen
  • Scissors

Click on the image to download the PDF template and make this chalkboard sign.

Before You Get Started:

  1. Gather all the materials together.
  2. Download the sign template.
  3. Print the template. Check the printed template against the sign you purchased. The PDF is made for standard size 8.5 x 11 paper. If you have a bigger sign, cut out the various elements of the template and lay them out on a new sheet of paper; tape in place.
  4. Real chalk surfaces need to be primed. Here’s how to prime the chalkboard (if it’s a true chalkboard). The sign in this tutorial looks like a chalkboard but it’s NOT! It’s actually a painted surface. Something I found out the hard way. That’s why I used the markers and not actual chalk. But if you use chalk sticks, them prime the board.
  5. Cut your transfer paper to the size of the sign and tape it securely on all side to the edges of the sign. Make sure the transfer paper has the correct side down.
  6. Position the template over the transfer paper making sure it’s centered to the top and bottom and both sides of the sign. Tape it in place like the in the photo below.
Taped template and transfer paper for tracing the chalkboard sign.

Step by Step Instructions

Here are the steps to make the chalkboard sign. Make sure you read these tips beforehand as they will save you time and possibly frustration!

  • Using a pen or pencil start tracing over the template from the top making sure you get the outline of the flourishes, letters, and tea pot. Take your time and make sure you press down hard enough to transfer the design through to the sign. This is a critical step and there are a lot of letters so be meticulous!
  • Carefully remove the taped template and transfer paper.
  • Using the chalk markers, draw over the design, filling in any areas that weren’t traced. I used both styles of chalk marker tips. The bullet tip was great for the flourishes. I liked the chisel tip for the text, but you’ll find which marker point works best for you. TIP: If you make a mistake use a damp Q-Tip to remove it and let dry before continuing.
  • Let the chalk or chalk ink dry completely on the completed sign. Protect from any unnecessary contact.

Here’s how the sign looked right after I finished it. I used a small ball of Museum Wax on the easel to hold the chalkboard sign securely against it.

How to Make a Label for the Back of a Wine Bottle

May 1, 2018 by Cindy Springer Leave a Comment

Most wine label orders we see are for labels for the front of a wine bottle. Front wine labels are perfect for gifts and one time gatherings like weddings, corporate events, or parties, but if you’re a serious home winemaker or are a wine start-up you may need a label for the back of your wine bottle. If that’s you, I’ll discuss what sizes we offer and what kind of information winemakers put on the back label of a wine bottle. I’ll also show you some real-life examples from other homemade wine makers for inspiration.

Example of a wine label for the back of the bottle. This is a 750 ml bottle with a 2 inch wide by 3 inch high label.Back label for a wine bottle –  custom made – 2″ wide by 3″ high

What is the most common label size for the back of a wine bottle?

There’s no wrong or right size for the back label of a wine bottle. Many of our customers like the back label to be a different size than the front label, usually smaller. The popular size for back labels seems to be a toss up between the 2” wide by 3” high rectangle and the 3” x 3” square. Some customers even choose to have the same label size for the front and back of the wine bottle, which works too. Below is an example of a customer’s order for a front label and back label and how the labels look side by side, then applied to a standard 750 ml wine bottle.

Examples of pairing a front wine label size with a back wine label size. Make your own personalized wine labels.

Customer ordered personalized wine labels for the front and back of their wine bottles.Front wine label 3.5″ w x 4″ h, back label 2″ w x 3″ h on a 750 ML bottle

What label sizes are offered for back labels?

We offer two shapes for labels to put on the back of wine bottles; square and rectangle. We do have circle and oval shapes, but most customers still opt for square or rectangle back labels. Under each of these shapes are the following size options; the first number is the width, the second number is the height and the measurements are in inches:

Square

  • 3 x 3
  • 4 x 4
  • 5 x 5

Rectangle

  • 2 x 3
  • 3 x 2
  • 2 x 4
  • 4 x 2
  • 3 x 4
  • 4 x 3
  • 4 x 6
  • 6 x 4

Front and back wine label size pairing recommendations

You’ve worked diligently to make the perfect homemade wine and you want your wine bottle to look great. Presenting your bottle with both a front and back label looks professional.  The 3.5″ x 4″ wine label looks great with a 3″ x 3″ or 2″ x 3″ back label. If you’re choosing what we call the Large Wine Label (4″ wide by 6″ high) for your front label, you might like the standard wine label size 3.5″ wide by 4″ high for the back label to give it a balanced look. See below for reference.Front wine label 4 inches by 6 inches and back wine bottle label 3.5 inches by 4 inches.

Below is an example of a customer order for back labels and front labels. This customer orders a large quantity once a year for the family wine and usually uses the same size label for the front and the back of the wine bottle. These wine labels were designed to honor a family member who immigrated from Italy.  The back label gives the details of the family wine making legacy starting from the 1890’s. Notice the ABV and the sulfite notice were included on the back label.

What information should be on the back label of a wine bottle?

According to an article by the academicwino.com there are certain things people expect on a the back label of a bottle they purchase. This isn’t necessarily the same information a home winemaker wants, but these are good points for you to consider. Here is what the article said:

“For the most part, front labels of wine bottles show the most essential (and often, legal) information for the consumer; including the winery name, grape variety and origin, the vintage year, and the alcohol content.  On the other side of the bottle, the back label will often show sensory characteristics (aroma, taste, etc), winery history information, and food pairings (among other things).  According to studies, the front and back labels of the wine bottle are the most effective ways to influence consumer choice.”

The back labels of wine bottles from home winemakers we’ve seen include several common themes and may have any or all of the following text:

  • Story/dedication/history of the reason the wine was made
  • Description of the grapes, including type and geographic location where they were grown
  • The type of wine
  • Who made the wine
  • Who bottled the wine
  • What year it was bottled
  • If not included on the front label then the ABV and any information on additives like sulfites.
  • A note to anyone who drinks the wine
  • A photo, QR code, logo, or URL related to the wine or winemaking process

Here are three examples from customers who created back labels for their homemade wine. Note that each one has a story that is unique to their wine. Your wine most likely has a story as well. Think how you might like to share it on your label.

How To Make a Back Label for a Wine Bottle

You have three options for making a wine label for the back of your bottle.

  1. Modify a template – Choose from any of our pre-made wine label designs or food label designs and modify the text and colors.
  2. Create from scratch – Start at the Make Your Own link in the upper right of the website header and choose your shape and size. Then use the online designer to make your design. The designer lets you add graphics, photos, text, add color, even create a QR code.
  3. Upload a design you made in a graphics program – If you have made your own artwork in another graphics program please be sure to follow our size specs which call for a .125″ bleed on all four sides of your design. Make sure your file is 300 pixels per inch for clear printing results and convert the file to a JPG or PNG format for uploading. TIF files and PDF files are problematic, so email them to us and ask us to convert them if you don’t know how. For this option you will also start at the Make Your Own link mentioned in option number two.

How to Make Personalized Movie Character Themed Party Favor Stickers

April 2, 2018 by Jenny Walters 2 Comments

Cartoon or animated movie characters are often the first choice for a child’s birthday party theme. How many little girls do you know who love Disney princesses or little boys that love Marvel super heroes or PJ Masks? Naturally they are your little one’s choice for their birthday party. We print custom party favors every day so we know something about creating personalized favor stickers for goody bags, favor boxes, or bottled beverages.

How to Make Your Own Personalized Party Favors with a Character

Party favors for characters like Anna & Elsa from Frozen the Movie are easy to find, but having your child’s name on the sticker is something special. That’s where our design online studio comes in handy. It allows you to add your child’s name to a variety of stickers. No matter if they like a minor character like Hei Hei from Moana or a wildly popular character like Sponge Bob, you can create and personalize a sticker for your child’s party. Let me show you how to make perfect party favor stickers for water bottle labels,  goody bags, juice labels, and more with a favorite character, in the same way we made the one below using our template called ‘Melted Snow.’ But first, there are a few things to consider before you get started.

Frozen Movie water bottle labels. Make yours online and upload your favorite character.

What Files Can I Upload?

There are a lot of images of movie cartoon characters on the internet, but not all of them look good once they’re printed. There are a few basic things you need to know about choosing files that upload to the online designer and print clearly. This is because most web images are 72 pixels per inch and while that looks great on the screen, for really clear printing, a graphic or photo file needs to be 300 pixels per inch. That’s a big difference in pixels per inch; kind of like comparing your smart TV screen to the TV screen you grew up with. What this means to you is, you need to get the largest file you can find so your favors print nice and sharp.

Make Moana water bottle labels using your own file. These adorable water bottle labels from the movie Moana are not sold as a template on our website, but a customer uploaded their own artwork and ordered them using the ‘Make Your Own‘ custom water bottle labels feature. This is one example of making your own design for kid’s party favors.

Do This to Find a Graphic File that Prints Clearly

There’s a secret to searching for a good image that most people don’t know about and it helps you find a larger, more clear file. The example uses Google as the search engine. Follow these steps:

  1. In the Google bar type in your search term. Here we typed in the rooster’s name from Moana.
  2. Next,  put your mouse over the word IMAGES from the header line and click on it to see all of the search results.
  3. When the images have loaded on the page move your mouse over TOOLS and select it. Under tools SIZE will display.
  4. Next select SIZE. A drop down displays the various sizes to choose from.
  5. Finally select LARGE (for a large file size) with your mouse. Now only the larger file results are displayed. Choose one you like. Hover your mouse over it to see the file size. Right click on it and ‘Save Image As.’ Name it and save it on your desktop.

How to find a clear image for printing when making a kid party favor.
TIP: Select files that are JPG or PNG. Do not use GIF files or try to use files from a video. If you see any jagged, pixilated, or blurry edges when you find a file, then that file will print jagged, blurry, and pixilated. There’s no fixing bad files. They will print exactly as you see them. Also, any files that say Index won’t work well. Index is a color and format issue that I won’t go into, but just know it’s low resolution for the most part and the online design tool doesn’t like that kind of file. So make sure you inspect the file extension name and make not of how it looks to you on the screen.

The best files are PNG files because the background is transparent around the main image. This allows for a background color to be added behind the character with out a white or black box showing around the character. The first file on the search results above was a large file but it looks small in size when clicked on. The second file is a YouTube file so pass on that. It takes about a minute or less to find a good file and the second row, second image from left is the winner. When you hover your mouse over it you see the file size is 784 x 1018.  A small file would only be double digits. It’s a PNG file too and is large and sharp. Below is a water bottle label created with this file. I saved it on my desktop, named it, and followed the steps 1, 2, 3 to create the design. After following the three steps, I only had to change the text color and font style from the default to get this result.

Follow these three steps to make a character party favor using the BYB design studio

The steps to make a popular party themed favor for kids using an online image.

Here’s what the Hei Hei label looks like once it’s printed. It looks great and was so simple to make! The label material is waterproof and colorfast. It comes with a crack and peel adhesive backing. All you do is peel off the backing and stick to the bottles.

What About Printing Artwork Purchased from Another Website?

What artwork purchased from another website looks like.Above is an example of a printable sheet of water bottle labels submitted by one of our customers. It was purchased from an online artist shop. We don’t print in this format. We set one label design onto the template within the online designer and as you can see this is a sheet of five labels. We had to crop the labels she wanted to fit into the template. There are quite a lot of artist stores on Etsy or Pinterest that sell printables with cartoon characters from every possible movie, book, or cartoon. Buying water bottle label artwork ready to print is not a bad way to go. There are a few issues I see with this.

Problems with Using Purchased Printable Files on a Home Printer

Number one, by printing labels at home you don’t have waterproof or self adhesive material to print them on. We do.

Second, you don’t have a million dollar print press that turns out professional results. We do.

Third, if your home printer isn’t set up properly you’re going to waste a lot of time and costly ink trying to get the stickers to print correctly.

And last but not least, why pay for artwork when you can make your own on our website for free?

When you buy a printable party favor file and want to use that artwork file to place an order with us, we’re happy to print them. We’ll probably need to check the file size and format for you since some graphic files work better with the online designer than others. We usually are able to change your file to the right format for uploading, just ask us.

These Disney Princess water bottle labels were personalized for a four year old’s birthday party. The customer originally ordered the artwork from a site that sells printable files. She then uploaded two designs and ordered the water bottle labels. How to Make a Meme Wine Label

February 1, 2018 by Jenny Walters Leave a Comment

What is a Meme?

Unless you’ve been unplugged from the internet you know that a meme is a photo with a witty phrase in bold text about people or events in popular culture. Memes became a cultural force with the rise of social media. A meme can also be an animated GIF. Memes cover a variety of topics including politics, celebrities, animals, pop culture, movies, events, sports, food, bad habits, and well, you get the picture, just about anything is meme worthy if it strikes a chord. A wine label meme is sure to make almost anyone laugh.

Example of a winememe - Starting my fruit juice diet...bottoms up.

What Makes a Good Meme?

In an effective meme, the photo and the message complement or juxtapose each other. The essence is in its simplicity and absurdity. Memes are usually satires or representations of things that may never happen in your life, but are funny anyway because they are so improbable. For instance who drinks wine from a gallon-sized wine glass? And how likely are you to call a new diet a fruit juice diet and only drink wine? Not likely, but it’s hilarious to consider isn’t it?

Why Make a Wine Meme?

Memes on wine bottle labels make great gifts for a variety of occasions; retirement, new baby, friendship, engagements, congratulations, parenting, new career, and so on. For gag gifts they can’t be beat. The secret of a great gift is to make the recipient feel special so imagine the look on the face of someone receiving a bottle like the one in the image below!

Give a bottle of wine with a meme label on it for a gag gift. Wine memes are easy to create.

How to Make a Birthday Wine Label Meme

In this post we’ll focus on showing you how to make a birthday meme on a wine label. Since we sell wine labels in quantities as low as one, this is perfect for birthdays.  All of our labels are self adhesive so all you have to do is buy a great bottle of wine and put the new label over the old one, or soak the old label off and add the new one.

Make a wine label with a birthday meme like this funny meme; Let's drin until neither of us remembers how old we are.

Start by finding a photo and deciding on the text. To get ideas for your memes use a meme generator like this one or refer to our list of birthday wine memes below. Once you’ve saved your photo and know what you want to say, you have two options to make your label. One, start with our meme template and edit it (the easiest option) or two, follow the steps below for making the meme from scratch:

  1. Put the mouse over Make Your Own>Custom Wine labels. Click ‘Customize It’ to enter the online designer. This gives you a blank wine label canvas.
  2. Put your mouse over the ADD IMAGE link and click on it. Browse your files to find the photo you chose. Select the photo and click OPEN. Make sure the photo extends beyond the red dashes, which are crop lines.
  3. Put your mouse over ADD TEXT. A text box will pop up. Hit the caps lock to use all caps. You’re not yelling, that’s just the style of memes. Type your meme words in the box. Put your mouse over the Font Family and within Sans Serif fonts select ANTON font style.
  4. Select the text and put your mouse over the Color box which is default black. A color palette pops up. Select WHITE and hit OK. While the text is still selected put your mouse over the FONT SIZE box and use the up or down arrow to make the meme words bigger or smaller.
  5. Once you have the FONT SIZE adjusted you’ll want to add the outline to your words. Select the text and put your mouse over STROKE. A color palette will pop up. Select Black and hit OK. While the text is still selected put your mouse over BORDER and use the up arrow to adjust the border thickness anywhere from .5 to 1.
  6. To adjust the placement of your text put your mouse over the Element Alignment tool. You can also select the text, hold down your mouse and grab the text to move it where it looks good.

Congratulations! Your wine label meme is done!

Guide to Ordering Mini Champagne Labels

September 5, 2017 by Cindy Springer 6 Comments

What’s better than toasting a special occasion with a glass of Champagne? Well, we think having your very own mini Champagne bottle with a personalized label is right up there. If you’re planning to use mini Champagne bottles for your next event this guide to finding the right size label for the bottle will be a great help.  Ten popular mini Champagne bottles are shown with the label size we recommend for a good fit.

What we call our standard mini Champagne label measures three inches wide by two inches high. When you choose a  sticker size from the drop down menu the first number is the width. This size label fits most mini bottles. We do offer a two inch circle as another option. Also consider our square size 3 wide x 3 high and the other rectangle size, 2 wide by 3 high. These sizes can be found under Make Your Own>Custom Stickers OR under Mini Wine Labels.

For the purposes of this guide to mini Champagne bottles this is how we measure our “standard” label for a 187ml bottle:

Ten Mini Champagne Bottles and Which Label Size to Choose

1. Barefoot Bubbly

The Barefoot Bubbly 187 ml bottle is 7.375  inches tall and 7.25 inches around.  The bottle starts curving about 2.5 inches from the base of the bottle, so any label taller than 2.5 inches tall will wrinkle.

  • We recommend the 3 inch wide by 2 inch high label size for the Barefoot Bubbly mini bottle.
  • A 2 inch circle sticker will also work.
  • You can also use the water bottle label size 8.25 x 1.75 and it will overlap by 1 inch, so if you use the water bottle label please allow for this when you create your design.

Barefoot Bubbly 187 ml shown with 3 x 2 size mini Champagne label.

2. Codorníu

The Codorníu 187 ml bottle is 8 inches tall and 7.25 inches around.  The bottle starts curving about 2.75 inches from the base of the bottle, so any label taller than 2.75 inches tall will wrinkle.

  • We recommend the 3 inch wide by 2 inch high label size for the Codorníu mini bottle.
  • A 2 inch circle sticker will also work.
  • You could also use the water bottle label size 8.25 x 1.75 and it would overlap by 1 inch, so if you use the narrow water bottle label please allow for this when you create your design.

Codorníu 187 ml shown with 3 x 2 size mini Champagne label.

3. Cook’s Brut

The Cook’s 187 ml bottle is 7.5 inches tall and 6.75 inches around. The bottle has a definite indented area for the label as you can see in the photo. It starts curving about 3 inches from the base of the bottle, so any label taller than 3 inches tall would wrinkle.

  • We recommend the 3 inch wide by 2 inch high, and/or the 3 inch by 3 inch label sizes for the Cook’s mini bottle.
  • A 2 inch circle sticker will also work.
  • You can also use both water bottle label sizes 8.25 x 1.75 or the 8 x 2.125 water bottle label. Please allow for 1.25 to 1.5 inch overlap when you create your design.

Cook’s 187 ml shown with 3 x 3 size square sticker.

4. Courtage

The Courtage 187 ml bottle is 8 inches tall and 7.25 inches around. The bottle starts curving about 2.75 inches from the base of the bottle, so any label taller than 2.75 inches tall will wrinkle.

  • We recommend the 3 inch wide by 2 inch high label size for the Courtage mini bottle.
  • A 2 inch circle sticker will also work.
  • You can also use the water bottle label size 8.25 x 1.75 and it will overlap by 1 inch, so if you do plan on using the narrow water bottle label please allow for this when you create your design.

5. Freixenet Carta Nevada

The Freixenet Carta Nevada 187 ml bottle is a little over 8  inches tall and 7.75 inches around.  The bottle starts curving about 2 inches from the base of the bottle, so any label taller than 2 inches tall will wrinkle.

  • We recommend the 3 inch wide by 2 inch high label size for the Freixenet Carta Nevada mini bottle.
  • A 2 inch circle sticker will also work.
  • You can also use the water bottle label size 8.25 x 1.75 and it will overlap by half an inch, so if you do plan on using the narrow water bottle label please allow for this when you create your design.

6. Freixenet Cordon Negro

The Freixenet Cordon Negro 187 ml bottle is a little over 8  inches tall and 7.75 inches around.  The bottle starts curving about 2 inches from the base of the bottle, so any label taller than 2 inches tall will wrinkle.

  • Because of the nature of the frosted glass finish on this bottle we DO NOT recommend the 3 inch wide by 2 inch high label size for the Freixenet Cordon Negro mini bottles as we do for the light color bottle Carta Nevada.
  • INSTEAD use the water bottle label size 8.25 x 1.75 and it will overlap by half an inch for a firmer grip on the glass. Please allow for this when you create your design.

7.  J. Rogét

The J. Rogét 187 ml bottle is 7.5 inches tall and 6.75 inches around. It starts curving a little over 3 inches from the base of the bottle, so any label taller than 3 inches high will wrinkle.

  • We recommend the 3 inch wide by 2 inch high rectangle, and/or the 3 inch by 3 inch square label sizes for the J. Rogét mini bottle.
  • A 2 inch or 2.5 circle sticker will also work.
  • You can also use both water bottle label sizes 8.25 x 1.75 or the 8 x 2.125 water bottle label. Please allow for 1.25 to 1.5 inch overlap when you create your design.

8.  Korbel

The Korbel 187 ml bottle is a little over 7 inches tall and 7.25 inches around. It starts curving about 2.5 inches from the base of the bottle, so any label taller than 2.5 inches tall will show wrinkles.

  • We recommend the 3 inch wide by 2 inch high rectangle size for the Korbel mini bottle.
  • A 2 inch circle sticker will also work.
  • You can also use both water bottle label sizes 8.25 x 1.75 or the 8 x 2.125 water bottle label. Please allow for a 1 to 1.25 inch overlap when you create your design.

9. LaMarca

The LaMarca 187 ml bottle is 7.75 inches tall and at the base is 7 inches around sloping out to 7.5 inches around before it begins to curve. The bottle has a definite area for the label as you can see in the photo. It’s a tricky bottle because of the sloping sides, but the 3 inch wide by 2 inch high label does fit nicely as long as you apply the label as close to the ridge of glass along the bottom as possible.

  • We recommend the 3 inch wide by 2 inch high rectangle size for the LaMarca mini bottle.
  • A 2 inch circle sticker will also work.

10. Moët & Chandon

While the Moët & Chandon is a more expensive bottle for most budgets, the look of this bottle is very stunning. The Moët & Chandon 187 ml bottle is a little over 8 inches tall and 7 inches around. It starts curving about 2.5 inches from the base of the bottle, so any label taller than 2.5 inches tall will start to wrinkle.

  • We recommend the 3 inch wide by 2 inch high rectangle for the Moët & Chandon mini bottle mainly because the ribbon neck label dips down fairly low into the labeling area.
  • A 2 inch circle sticker will also work.
  • You can also use the both water bottle label sizes 8.25 x 1.75 or the 8 x 2.125 water bottle label. Please allow for 1 inch to 1.25 inch overlap when you create your design.

Where to Shop for Mini Champagne Bottles

There are quite a few retailers that sell mini Champagne bottles: Total Wine and More, BevMo, as well as specialty liquor stores. CostPlus World Market sells the beautiful Courtage mini bottles. Some grocers sell 187 ml bottles, most commonly Barefoot Bubbly, which we found at a Kroger affiliate store Quality Food Center. Prices range from $2.69 for a single Barefoot Bubbly to $12.99 for the Moët & Chandon. A four pack of Cook’s 187ml bottles runs about $10.99. This should give you a good idea of the cost for the mini Champagne bottles. As for the custom mini Champagne bottle labels, the prices start at 99 cents each for ten labels, so $9.90 plus shipping. Our labels are waterproof and are NOT paper labels so you can put your bottles on ice and the labels will stay on. The adhesive will withstand cold temperatures. Don’t be fooled by sites that offer water-resistant labels. That’s not the same thing as waterproof. Nothing is more annoying then that moment when you present your bottles and the labels are sliding off, or worse, the ink is running. With custom mini Champagne labels from BottleYourBrand you can rest easy knowing the labels will look great from the start to finish of your special day.
