Burlap and Lace Party Favors – Three DIY Projects

May 29, 2014 by Cindy Springer Leave a Comment

Burlap and lace are a mix of rustic country and city chic. I like the rough texture of the burlap juxtaposed with the delicate lace. If you”re as crazy for this theme as I am you’ll want to make these featured party favors. The only tools you’ll need are a ruler, iron, hot glue gun and scissors. Read on to see  how to make these favors and discover some other favors made with labels in the same theme.

Make these burlap and lace theme party favors.

Lace and Burlap Envelope

The first favor we feature is a lace and burlap envelope to hold seed packets. The burlap envelope is secured by sliding the lace band over the flap.

Step by step instructions show how to make this burlap envelope.

Start by using spray starch or sizing to smooth out the burlap. Iron flat.

Use spray starch and an iron to prepare the burlap.

Next make a template. Use tag board or tissue paper. This envelope pattern is 5.5 inches wide and 12 inches long. Adapt your envelope size to meet your needs.

Some of the supplies to make a burlap envelope. No sewing needed.

Fold each long edge over 1/2 inch and press.

Fold over the edges 1/2 inch.

Measure five inches and fold over lengthwise, then press. Hot glue along the seams and carefully press down to create the pouch portion of the envelope.

Measure the envelope and fold over.

Next, fold over the top flap and press down. Do not glue the top flap of the envelope.

Fold over the flap and iron.

Take the lace and measure a length around the top of the envelope. Leave enough lace to fold over the end and cut. Glue the ends to form a circle. Make a small bow from lace and hot glue to the middle of the circle opposite the glued seam. Insert seed packet and fold flap over. Slide lace band over the flap and you’re done!

 Mini Clay Pot Favor

This adorable live favor is made with two inch clay pots,  a mini basket, lace and burlap. We used a mini fern, but herbs, tree seedlings or any small plant will work.

Mini potted plant party favor made with cotton lace and burlap square.

These are the supplies we used. The wire baskets are actually sugar/sweetener  packet holders. These were purchased at TJMaxx. Small woven baskets like these work too.

The pencils were placed in these photos to show you the scale of the baskets and pots.

Lace edging for clay pot favors

Shop for lace at your local craft store. This lace is from Hobby Lobby. Cut and hot glue a length around the top of the pot. Be careful not to glue your finger!  Cut a 4 inch by 4 inch square of burlap and  place inside the basket. Next, thread lace around the top of the basket and tie a bow on one side.

The clay pot is ready for planting. Adorable!

Burlap and Lace Favor Box

The final DIY favor is a pillow box embellished with burlap and lace ribbons. These boxes are great for candies or small edible favors, even seed packages.

Pillow box wedding favors with burlap and lace.

These are the materials you’ll need to make this favor: a spool of burlap/lace 2.5″ wide, pillow boxes in natural kraft brown, narrow ribbons of choice and tiny flowers for the embellishment. By far this is one of the easiest favors I’ve ever put together. Lure a few friends with a good bottle of wine, sit down and watch your favorite movie while you make these boxes. They’re that easy to make!

Supplies to make burlap and lace favor box

Fold the ends of the pillow boxes in so the box is no longer flat. Measure the burlap/lace ribbon around the pillow box and overlap one edge. Glue firmly on the ‘back’ side. Do the same with the other ribbons, layering from widest to narrowest on top. Finish off with  a dab of hot glue to hold the flower in place.

More DIY Favor Ideas

Custom hang tags are versatile favors to tie on boxes, bottles, and bags. The one featured in the photo below has a special message from a bride and groom.

I promised some additional burlap and lace favors at the beginning of this post. Aren’t these wedding water bottle labels delightful? Find and customize your water bottle labels with this design here.

January 24, 2014 by Jenny Walters Leave a Comment

Valentine's Day Favor Bags made for under $1 each

If you’ve ever been given the task of coming up with a Valentine’s Day Party favor, and you’re on a budget, we know how difficult it can be. We have a super cute, super easy and super cheap Valentine’s Day favor to share with you. Using a 3-inch by 3-inch custom sticker  from our pre-made label templates, a lace-cut paper doily, and a ribbon, we show you how to dress up a basic white paper favor bag. For our label embellishment we chose Hearts on a String. Fill the bags with your favorite Valentine’s Day candy and these bags are sure to be a hit.

Three inch by three inch Valentine's Day label template Hearts-On-A-String

Supplies you’ll need:

  • White paper favor bags (24 pcs.) 6 1/2″ x 2 1/4″ x 3 1/2″, about $4.25 for 24 pieces
  • Paper doilies, $1.99 for a package of 30
  • Spool of 1/4 inch ribbon, under $10 at Joann Fabric and crafts
  • Hole punch
  • Custom label, 3-inches x 3-inches from Bottle Your Brand

Supplies for making an inexpensive Valentine's Day favor bag

Step by step instructions:

  1. Order your label from Bottle Your Brand. We ship within two business days so you still have time for Valentine’s Day.
  2. Place your sticker on the bag before you fill it while the bag is flat. It’s easier to line it up and make it straight.
  3. Fill the bag with your choice of candy. We like M & M’s.
  4. Fold the top of the bag over approximately 1 inch.
  5. Fold a  4-inch doily in half and place over the fold of the bag.
  6. Punch two holes through both the doily and fold of the bag, approximately 1.5 inches apart.
  7. Thread 12″ of 1/4 inch ribbon through the holes and tie a bow in the front just like you would to lace your shoes.

Cute! A simple bow and paper doily make this Valentine's Day favor bag amazing!

Voilà. Your Valentine’s Day favor is now complete. Each favor bag should take about 2 minutes or less to assemble and cost less than $2 each, (not including the candy.) This craft project can be adapted to any size favor bag, just be sure to purchase the corresponding doily size and a label that is to scale with the bag. You’ll find other fantastic label designs in our pre-made templates. If you like to make your own labels and stickers, you’ll find other square sticker templates that are blank, which allows you to create or upload your own artwork. Other square label sizes we offer are 4-inch square and 5-inch square.

If you’ve made your own party favor bags with one of our stickers please share the results with us. We’d love to see your photos! Email us at [email protected] Happy labeling!

Holiday Gift Idea #5: Wine Gift Wrap Idea

December 9, 2013 by Cindy Springer Leave a Comment

It’s not too late to make a wine label for your wine gifts this year. In part five of our series of Holiday Gift Ideas we show you how to wrap a wine bottle with items everyone has on hand this time of year. This gift wrap idea is easy enough for beginners and adds flair to giving wine. Anyone can show up at a party and shove a wine bottle at the host. It will go on the bar next to all the other bottles and they’ll forget which one you gave them. Now this can be a good thing if you’re giving cheap wine, but if you’re giving a bottle of wine you took time to select, then give a bottle with a festive wrap. The host or hostess is certain to remember your gift. The only tools you need is a ruler,  scotch tape and scissors. Third grade kids use these tools and you can too! As promised this takes ten steps or less to make.

Easy Wine Bottle Gift Wrap Idea -Use supplies on hand

Normally we recommend you remove the existing label and add your custom label. This idea is for those of you who want to leave the original wine label on the bottle, but still want to give wine with a personalized touch. It saves the time it takes to soak off the original label which, depending on the adhesive, can take a while.

Your first step is to go online to www.BottleYourBrand.com and order your holiday wine label. To customize a wine label online is very simple. We ship them out within two business days so there’s still plenty of time to order wine labels before the holidays.  The minimum order is ten labels giving you plenty of  labels for all of the Christmas parties you attend.

Materials to assemble:

  • Festive gift wrap
  • Scotch Tape
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Custom Wine Label
  • Wine Bottle

Materials you'll need to assemble for wine gift wrap. The fifth in our series on Gift Wrap Ideas.

When your wine labels arrive. Gather together the rest of the materials.  Unroll the gift wrap and measure out a square approximately 18 inches by 18 inches. Cut out the square and with the print side down roll the gift wrap around the bottle two times leaving about 1/2 inch extending out from the bottom of the bottle. Crimp and tape securely on the bottom of the bottle.

Take a length of ribbon and wrap twice around the bottle neck bringing the ends to the front and tie a simple bow. Wired ribbon works exceptionally well because the ribbon stays perky, allowing for you to shape it.

With the scissors take the top of the wrap above the neck of the bottle and cut into strips. Gently pull the first and second layer of gift wrap apart fluffing up the strips.

Cut slits in the top of the gift wrap and separate the two layers to make the top full looking.

Peel the protective backing off the wine label and square up to the bottle. Place the label on the bottle and smooth from the center to the left and then to the right removing any air bubbles.

That’s all! Step back and take a look at your fancy wine gift. Good job!

Holiday Gift Idea #4: Christmas Party Favor

December 6, 2013 by Cindy Springer Leave a Comment

Christmas Party Favor Idea Gable Boxes with Custom Gift Tag Stickers

Let the party planning begin! These gable boxes make the perfect Christmas party favors and are guaranteed to make a festive place setting. I discovered these gable boxes cruising through the party department at Target recently. At a price of $1 for three boxes I couldn’t pass up the bargain, figuring to share them with you, dear readers. Don’t you think adding a custom gift tag sticker, and filling with truffles or homemade tea cookies is the perfect way to put these favor boxes to use? They make a delightful, inexpensive gift to give holiday guests. These boxes are 5 1/16 in L x 2 1/2 in W x 4 in H.  Three colors were available the day I was at Target; navy blue, turquoise and burgundy red.

Party Favors boxes for $1 from Target

I used materials on hand from my craft stash, along with BottleYourBrand‘s Holiday Gift Tag Stickers. For very little money and time the result was amazing.

Here are the materials I had to work with:

  •  Mini-Christmas bulb
  • Raffia
  • Colored Hemp Twine
  • Ribbon
  • Washi Tape
  • Dotted Tulle
  • Custom Gift Tag Stickers

Materials used to make Christmas Party favors with gable boxes and gift tag stickers

Here are the steps to making the navy blue favor box with a mini-bulb:

  • Customize and order this gift tag sticker.
  • Measure around the width of the gable box and cut a length of ribbon one/half inch longer than the width.
  • Wrap the ribbon around the center of the box and using double-sided tape attach the ends of the ribbon to the box and to each other on the back of the box.
  • Place the gift tag sticker in the center of the front of the box.
  • Fill your box with the treat or gift you’ve chosen.
  • Next, tie a bow with the ribbon and using floral wire attach the bulb to the bow. Tie the bow to the box handle with a small length of ribbon.

Here’s a photo of  the result:

The next favor box is decorated with colored raffia and hemp twine. These were purchased at World Market. If you’re not sure how to tie a raffia bow there are many videos on YouTube that are helpful. The gift tag sticker we used is HoHoHo.

  • Order your custom sticker from Bottle Your Brand.
  • Take a long length of twine and wrap around the favor box twice. Tie a shoestring bow in the middle of the box. This bow will be on the back of the favor box.
  • Turn the box around and separate the strands of wine to form a wide gap on both sides of the box forming an X with the twine.
  •  Place the gift tag sticker in the center of the X formed by the colored twine.
  • Fill your favor box with the treat of your choice. We used Godiva Truffles.
  • Tie the raffia ribbon to the handle of the box.

Here’s the result:

Use gift tag stickers to decorate a mini favor box.

Our final party favor, the turquoise gable box, takes just a bit more time, but it’s worth it.  This favor is decorated with our Holiday Gift sticker and a dotted tulle mini pom-pom. Since pom poms seem to be popping up everywhere, why not on favors at your Christmas party?

  • Order your custom sticker from Bottle Your Brand
  • Take your Washi tape and wrap length-wise around the middle of the box. Cut the tape in the center of the back of the box and overlap the edges.
  • Next, starting at the bottom of the handle opening, place the tape around the box height-wise and meet at the back of the box under the handle opening.
  • Place your custom gift tag sticker in the middle of the front of the box where the tape forms a cross.
  • Fill your box with homemade cookies or whatever you plan to give. We used small lemon tea cookies. Yummy!
  • Next, make a tulle mini-pom pom. This looks time consuming, but it’s really quick and easy. Check out YouTube for tutorials and step-by-step instructions.
  • Tie your pom pom to the box with baker’s twine or a piece of floral wire.

Here is the finished result for the Mini-Pom Pom Favor Box.

Small gable box decorated with Washi tape and a dotted tulle pom pom. Perfect for party favors or gifts for dinner guests.

I’ve always been a fan of giving favors at parties, but especially at Christmas. If you decide to give these favor ideas a try let us know the result. We’d love to see photos as well. Simply email to [email protected]

December 2, 2013 by Cindy Springer Leave a Comment

DIY Food Gift Idea #3

As we look at Thanksgiving weekend 2013 in the rearview mirror, we hope you shared plenty of turkey and gravy with those you love best. Welcome to the official start of the 2013 holiday gift giving season! We’re continuing with the series we promised that includes simple, inexpensive, DIY Christmas gift ideas with ten steps or less. This post features a food gift package idea which, of course, includes custom food stickers. It’s  so simple it almost doesn’t need instructions, but we’ll include them, just in case you’ve been sipping on a few glasses of wine and need clarification!

We’re fans of receiving baked goods for the holidays and anything with pretty gift wrap makes receiving a food gift even more appealing. This scallop popcorn treat box is just the thing for homemade Christmas gifts.

Scallop treat box with custom food label makes an easy holiday gift wrapping idea

Here is a list of materials you’ll need:

  • Wilton Popcorn Treat Boxes 4/Pkg-White (We found these at Joann Fabric and Craft store for $1.99)
  • Length of fabric ribbon – 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch wide
  • Custom food sticker from Bottle Your Brand (We used this food sticker)
  • Medium cellophane treat bag- 9 1/2 in tall x 4 in wide x 2 1/4 in deep (About $2.99 for 25)
  • Mini Christmas ornament or sprig of holiday greens
  • Fishing line or baker’s twine

Materials to make DIY scallop treat box for holiday gift idea

Order the food sticker Cookies from Bottle Your Brand. This sticker is 2 inches wide by 3 inches high. It works very well on the treat box. When the sticker arrives, usually within a week, peel the protective backing off the sticker and place it on the treat box.

Apply the crack and peel food label to the scallop treat box

Take the cello bag and fill with your treats. Leave space at the top of the cello bag for tying the ribbon.

Thread the ribbon through the top of the mini-ornament using fishing line or baker’s twine. Tie the bow and slide the ornament to the knot area of the bow. Finish tying the bow around the neck of the cello bag.

Place the cello bag inside the labeled scallop popcorn treat box.

DIY Christmas gift idea. Perfect for homemade food gifts and easy to assemble.

That’s it! Not a complicated gift wrapping idea, but one that makes you looks like gift wrapping genius.

Happy gifting!
