You’ve probably noticed the increasing visibility of sports drinks on the shelves at your local grocery stores and how many sports teams are using them on the sidelines. Even though I think water is a great hydrator, sports drink labels are a common request we get at BYB. We tested a few of the most common sports drink bottles against our various label sizes to come up with the best solutions for those of you looking to make your own sports drink labels. Keep in mind our labels are waterproof and fully self-adhesive so you can store these drinks in ice tubs or the refrigerator with great results.
Sports Bottles Present a Challenge to Label
The three bottles in the intro photo are of course Gatorade® brand. The sizes from left to right are 32 fl. oz., 20 fl. oz., and 12 fl. oz. One of the first things you’ll discover about labeling sports drink bottles is they have a very irregular surface. The bottles have a lot of ridges and depressions that make it tricky to get a label on without some dimples or rippling. Even the original labels that are made of a slick synthetic material don’t stick to the bottles without some dimpling. It’s easy to remove the existing labels since they only have adhesive on the ends of the labels. They come off cleanly and might leave a small bit of label material that you can pull off with your fingernail. Luckily our labels are made of a heavy synthetic material and the backing is completely adhesive so where there are ridges on the bottles the labels will stick fast. See how bumpy these bottles are?
Sports Drink Bottles 12 Ounces
Let’s look at the smallest Gatorade bottle first. It’s 12 ounces and comes in a six pack at stores like Safeway and Target. We think this size is the the best choice for party favors like birthdays, sleepovers, and teen parties.
The label on this bottle is 2.75 inches tall and a little over 8 inches wide. Both of our water bottle labels fit this bottle, but the best fit is the 8.25 x 1.75 inch size. It overlaps a bit so there’s no gap in the back. See the labeled 12 oz. bottle in the photo below:
Here’s a close-up of the back of the 12 oz. sports drink bottle with the 8.25 x 1.75 custom label on it. Not bad, right? Picture this as a favor at rewards night for any sports team.
Sports Drink Bottles 20 Ounces
The next bottle size up is 20 ounces. I found this in 8-packs at the local Safeway grocers. It’s probably the ideal bottle size for warm weather activities. You might want to make a custom label for this size for fans or participants alike at your event. The label we used for this bottle is what we call our beer label but you can use it for anything. It’s dimensions are 4 inches wide by 3.5 inches tall. It covers the front of the bottle quite nicely despite the indentations and raised areas. It does not, however, cover the entire bottle so I’ve provided all views, front, back and side below.
The two water bottle label sizes we have also work on this bottle, but neither one wraps all the way around the bottle. The longest label we have is 8.25 inches, while this bottle is approximately 9 inches in circumference.
Sports Drink Bottles 32 Ounces
The largest individual sports drink bottle I found at the grocery store is 32 ounces. A sports event like a triathlon, marathon, track meet or other competitive running sport usually calls for some serious hydration after crossing the finish line and this fits the bill.
Below see what the 32 ounce bottle looks like with a custom sports drink label on it. It wraps around the bottle with only a slight gap in the back. Here are two photos, one of the front and the other of the back so you can see how it looks. Oddly enough the sticker we call our bumper sticker fits this bottle very well. It’s 11 inches wide by 3 inches high. Like I said previously, BYB’s name of the label doesn’t really matter if the label size fits your needs.
As you can see these sports drink bottles make colorful drink alternatives to soda pop for children’s parties. Creating a sports drink label is a simple task using the tools on BYB. You can even add a school mascot or logo to the bottle. Here are the steps to make your own design.
